Cognitive Effects Defined

Cognition is another term for how we think and learn. Cognitive changes – or changes in thinking – are very common after a TBI.

When the brain is injured, thinking is affected. Thinking may be different and harder than it used to be.

Rehabilitation and the natural healing of the brain will help cognition to improve.

Cognitive recovery often takes longer than physical recovery. Remember that it is an injury to a specific part or parts of the brain that causes cognitive difficulties or challenges. Being patient is very helpful during the recovery and rehabilitation process.

Just as with physical problems, not everyone with a TBI has the same severity of cognitive difficulties. The neuropsychologist, occupational therapist, and speech-language pathologist are healthcare team members who evaluate and treat service members and veterans with cognitive challenges.
